What is Trauma?

Trauma is a response to a deeply disturbing or threatening experience. For children and young people, this can encompass a wide range of events, including abuse, neglect, bullying, witnessing violence, or the loss of a loved one. These experiences can have a profound impact on a child's physical and emotional wellbeing.
The Body's Response: Fight, Flight, or Freeze
When a child experiences trauma, their nervous system kicks into high gear. This is often referred to as the "fight-or-flight" response, triggered by the sympathetic nervous system. It releases hormones like adrenaline, which increase heart rate, breathing, and overall alertness. This prepares the body to fight back against a threat or escape danger.
However, in some cases, a child might not be able to fight or flee. This can lead to a "freeze" response, where the body shuts down and goes into a state of shock. This is triggered by the parasympathetic nervous system, which works to conserve energy and promote healing. While the parasympathetic state is crucial for recovery, it can also make it difficult for a child to process and express their emotions.
How Trauma Affects Children and Young People
The effects of trauma can manifest in a variety of ways for children and young people. These can include:
Emotional: Difficulty regulating emotions like anger, sadness, or anxiety.
Behavioural: Acting out, withdrawal, or self-harm.
Physical: Headaches, stomach aches, sleep problems.
Social: Difficulty interacting with peers or forming healthy relationships.
Academic: Problems with concentration, learning, or attending school.
Supporting Children and Young People
at Risk of Exclusion

Jaskulla Mentoring recognises that children who have experienced trauma are more likely to be at risk of exclusion in school settings. Our Intensive Care Package is a 6-week program designed to provide these children with the support they need to thrive.
What Does the Intensive Care Package Offer?
Comprehensive Assessment: We begin with initial observations of the child in their daily routine, followed by an in-depth assessment conducted in collaboration with a professional who knows the child well. This helps us understand their unique needs and challenges.
Tailored Interventions: Our five sessions per week, for two hours each, provide individualised support that addresses the child's emotional, social, and behavioural needs.
Collaboration and Consistency: We work closely with parents/carers and school professionals to develop action plans for consistent support across all environments. Weekly updates ensure everyone is on the same page.
Predictability and Safety: Consistent scheduling creates a sense of security and predictability, allowing the child to feel safe and focus on growth.
Invest in Their Future
This intensive program offers a structured and supportive environment to help children heal from trauma, regulate their emotions, and develop the skills they need to thrive in school and beyond. By addressing the underlying issues leading to exclusionary behaviour, we can empower them to succeed.
