When I first met Jake (name changed for privacy), a wonderful 4-year-old with the knack for using some of the biggest swear words. These words picked up from his surroundings, served as his way of expressing overwhelm and sheer anger. In our initial session, Jake made his feelings abundantly clear: he didn’t want to come with me and shouted demands to go home. Instead of pushing back, I chose to validate his feelings, empathising with the difficulty of his experience.

For children like Jake, swearing isn’t about being naughty; it’s often an emotional outlet. At just 4 years old, he was grappling with anxiety, school transitions, and various stressors. His swearing was a sign of these overwhelming emotions. Over time, through empathy, clear boundaries, and playful engagement, Jake began to open up and build trust.

One particularly memorable session included a fun coke-and-mentos experiment (his brilliant idea!), playing Pooh Sticks, and even making a new friend at the park, despite a language barrier. It was inspiring to witness Jake not only managing his emotions better but also confidently interacting with others.

The breakthrough moment came when Jake said, “I like being picked up by you now, and I’m not going to swear today.” For a 4-year-old who had once struggled with overwhelming emotions and big words, that was a monumental achievement.

Jake’s story demonstrates that swearing in young children is often misunderstood. It presents an opportunity to dig deeper, provide support, and help them feel heard.
